The
challenge for teachers: To prepare students to
solve problems we have never seen, using technologies
that have not been invented, for jobs that have
not yet been created.
School-to-Career
is a system of policies, partnerships and strategies
that promote
- access
to learning for all students
- preparation
for success in a complex and changing world
By
access we mean, engaging the whole learner --
“minds, hearts and hands” -- through:
- compelling content
- appropriate instructional strategies
- supportive relationships and guidance
The
same strategies serve also to prepare students
for success in a complex world.
- Relevant content allows students to connect
their education to their own interests and
to the “real world” and helps
them see future possibilities.
- Learning in ways that meet individual needs
allows students to experience success and
develop a portfolio of knowledge and skills
to take with them and build upon.
- Relationships with and support from caring
adults promote self-knowledge and social capital
that will carry students into the future with
confidence.
In
other words, these are things we all want for
all our youth:
- vision
- knowledge and skills
- confidence
As
teachers and counselors our key role in the school-to-career
system is to offer students authentic learning
experiences.
Basic
Principles of School-to-Career and Authentic
Learning:
- student-centered teaching, learning and
guidance
- high
expectations and rigorous education for all
youth
- broad
career exposure and preparation
- pathways
to post-secondary education
- caring
adults and mature role models
- involvement
of parents, communities and employers
You
are probably doing a lot of these things already!
At Berkeley Unified School District, Joan Horikoshi,
District School-to-Career Coordinator, developed
a check sheet for teachers. Click here
to see how many of these strategies you are
already employing.
