Industry Associations

California Restaurant Association is a professional trade association for California Restaurants. See their education and recruitment page for information on school-to-career.

Biotechnology Industry Association is a professional organization for biotechnology companies, academic institutions and biotechnology centers.

Information Technology Association of America is a trade association covering the broad spectrum of fields within IT. Their website provides information on the IT industry, its issues, association programs, publications, meetings and seminars.

National Dairy Council is the nutrition-marketing arm of Dairy Management Inc.TM. The council specializes in dairy nutrition research, education and communication. The consumer education section of the website offers tools and resources for nutrition education.

National Retail Federation is a retail trade association. The Federation specializes in conducting programs and services in research, education, training, information technology, and government affairs centered around the retail trade.

National Skill Standards Board is a coalition of leaders from business, labor, employee, education, and community and civil rights organizations who have created a national system of skills standards, assessment and certification. SBC Pacific Bell Knowledge Network Explorer is an education website that has resources for both teachers including lesson plans, curriculum and activities for students.

Government Agencies

California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office see their Advisory Committee on Career Development and Advisory Committee on Work-based Learning and Employment.

California Department of Education see Academic and Career Integration Unit, Content Standards, Challenge Career Standards, (non-board approved standards in the areas of Foreign Language, Health Education, Physical Education, Service Learning and Applied Learning. Select the Career Preparation Overview for standards in Agriculture Education, Business Education, Industrial Technology Education, Healthy Careers Education and Home Economics.

California Employment Development Department (EDD) provides links and assistance programs for job placement and referrals, unemployment insurance, disability insurance, employment and training, labor market information and payroll taxes.

California School-to-Career supports reforms in the educational system that include the integration of school-based and work-based learning, the use of contextual, applied teaching strategies, and the opportunity for students to choose career-related coursework and workplace experiences, with equal access for all students. State and Local Governments on the Net has a comprehensive list of California State, County and City websites.

Workforce Investment Board (WIB) is a governor appointed board that advises and assists in the planning and coordination of workforce development programs and services. Many county and cities also have local workforce investment boards.

U.S. Department of Education see the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education for implementation and funding in smaller learning communities. See the Office of Vocational and Adult Education for information on career and technical education.

California Chamber of Commerce website links provide a list and links to all local Chambers of Commerce sorted by County.

Chevron Best Classroom Practices has lesson plans centered around math and science.

PG and E’s the Energenius Program offers free K-8 curriculum to teachers working with in their service area.

National Employer Leadership Council (NELC) is a coalition of senior executives from companies, trade associations and business organizations that support school-to career initiatives. The NELC Resource Center includes best practices and resources for school-to career.

Southern California Edison provides support to schools (SCE and Your Community) and offers curriculum on energy safety (SCE Kids).

United States Chamber of Commerce is a business federation representing 3,000,000 businesses, 3,000 state and local chambers, 830 business associations and 93 American Chambers of Commerce in 81 countries.

University-based Programs and Laboratories

Appalachia Educational Laboratory is one of ten Regional Educational Laboratories. Its national specialty is Unlocking Today’s Technology for Tomorrow’s Students.

Career Academy Support Network (CASN) is housed at UC Berkeley and offers support to career academies across the nation. The Center on Education and Work, School of Education, University of Wisconsin-Madison, seeks to enhance the quality of career-related learning for all individuals in schools, colleges, and the workplace. Established in 1964 the Center for Education and Work (CEW) offers resources, publications and conferences for educators. Columbia Education Center is a private educational service organization based in Oregon. Its website includes information on professional development and free lessons plans developed by teachers in language arts, mathematics, science and social science.

ERIC Clearinghouse is a national education information network from the National Library of Education and the U.S. Department of Education consisting of 16 clearinghouses each serving a specialized field of education. See the ERIC Clearinghouse on Adult, Career and Vocational Education.

Professional Educator Faculty Engagement in California School to Career Project (PEFE) is a statewide network of professional educator faculty and their K-18 partners created to integrate School-to-Career pedagogy and practice into higher education pre-service programs.

Harvard Project Zero is an educational research group at the Harvard Graduate School of Education that investigates the development of learning processes in children, adults, and organizations, including “multiple intelligences”.

Lab @ Brown is one of ten Regional Educational Laboratories. Its national specialty is Teaching Diverse Learners.

Laboratory for Student Success (LSS) is one of ten Regional Educational Laboratories. Its national specialty is Educational Leadership.

Foundations, Coalitions and Consulting Organizations

BaySCAN is the Bay Area School to Career Action Network, a coalition of regional and statewide business, labor, education, and local School-to-Career partnership organizations. The Resource and Service Providers page provides links to marketing tools, research, best practices and resources on School-to-Career.

Buck Institute for Education (BIE) is a non-profit research and evaluation organization dedicated to improving schools by advancing knowledge about the practice of teaching and the process of learning. Located in Northern California, the Institute provides materials, training and technical assistance on project-based learning, problem-based learning with a special focus on economics and internships.

California Federation of Teachers (CFT) is the statewide affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers. Of particular interest is their Committee on School-to-Career that includes useful links for teachers, parents and students on career exploration, curriculum integration and experience outside of the classroom.

California School Boards Association. School-to-Career materials available for school board members and other interested stakeholders: Increasing Rigor and Relevance: Linking School to Career Best District Practices and Increasing Rigor and Relevance: The School Board Connection. CalSCAN is the California School-to-Career Action Network, a coalition of organizations across California dedicated to the success of School-to-Career efforts.

Career Planning and Adult Development Network is a membership organization for career counselors, career coaches, job search trainers and human resource professionals. The Network publishes a bimonthly newsletter and quarterly journal and offers workshops and conferences.

Coalition of Essential Schools is a national network of school and regional centers working to create schools using the following common principles: Learning to use one's mind well; Less is More; depth over coverage; Goals apply to all students; Personalization; Student-as-worker; teacher-as-coach; Demonstration of mastery; A tone of decency and trust; Commitment to the entire school; Resources dedicated to teaching and learning; and Democracy and equity. George Lucas Education Foundation is a clearinghouse for information, resources and best practices on integrating project based learning and technology into the classroom.

National Academy Foundation, through resources and professional development, NAF sustains a national network of career academies centered around three themes finance, travel & tourism, and information technology. Its resource center has materials and tools applicable to any career theme. National Career Academy Coalition (NCAC) is a coalition of schools, teachers, students, individuals and business that support career academies. See their Career Academy Toolkit which contains an action plan and timeline.

New Ways to Work (NWW) provides technical assistance, training, customized tools and facilitated support to employers, schools, community organizations and community collaboratives interested in developing systems that enhance and improve workplace practices, career development activities, educational improvement efforts and collaborative systems development. As the lead partner in a statewide effort to promote effective employer and labor engagement and work-based learning, NWW has posted numerous best practices and tools to facilitate this work. Visionlink (Impact Consulting) provides software that integrates education, workforce, social and youth service solutions deployed across the World Wide Web. They also provides technical assistance in project-based and community-connected learning.


Community-Based Organizations and Direct Service Providers

Center for Ecoliteracy provides funding and resources for educational organizations and school communities to support direct experience learning in the natural sciences.

Junior Achievement (JA) is a collaboration among educators, parents and community to introduce youth to free enterprise, business and economics.
