Tools for Implementation

The Big Picture Company designs break-through public schools, researches and replicates new models for education, trains educators to serve as leaders in their schools and communities, and actively engages the public as participants and decision makers in the education of our youth. Buck Institute for Education (BIE) is a non-profit research and evaluation organization dedicated to improving schools by advancing knowledge about the practice of teaching and the process of learning. Located in Northern California, the Institute provides materials, training and technical assistance on project-based learning, problem-based learning with a special focus on economics, and internships. California Careers, a site sponsored by the California Career Resource Network (CalCRN), provides information, resources and tools for career exploration and development. Includes career assessment tools, interest and personality inventories, and labor market and occupational information. The downloadable California Career Planning Guide, geared to first time career seekers, includes career interest surveys, and information on goal setting, resumes, interviewing, and links to many other sites.

California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office Statewide Committee for Work-based Learning and Employment Services the site includes tools and resources for work-based learning for high school and community college educators.

California STC Clearinghouse is California’s clearinghouse for STC tools and resources on all subjects, for all educators and other stakeholders.

Career Academy Support Network (CASN) housed at UC Berkeley, offers support to career academies across the nation. See the Forms Bank (a series of customizable templates in Word 97 to facilitate community and employer partnerships), Career Academy Self Assessment Guide, Scheduling Guide (for block scheduling), Curriculum Integration Report: Action Projects (available from the publisher), and Internship Handbook.

Competency Profiles from the California Department of Education Home Economics Careers and Technology has resources to evaluate students by industry standards. Profiles are available in Consumer and Family Studies, Child Development and Education, Consumer Services, Fashion Design, Manufacturing & Merchandising, Food Science, Dietetics & Nutrition, Food Service & Hospitality, Interior Design, and Furnishings & Manufacturing.

The Gateway to Educational Materials is a searchable website sponsored by the Department of Education. It provides educators with quick and easy access to thousands of educational resources found on various federal, state, university, non-profit, and commercial Internet sites.

George Lucas Education Foundation is a clearinghouse for information, resources and best practices on integrating project based learning and technology into the classroom.

Groundhog Job Shadow Day see the downloadable How-to-Kit, a step by step guide to plan and implement job shadowing.

Labor Market Information is a website of the Employment Development Department that provides information on job demand, salaries and unemployment. Of particular interest is Labor Market Information for Education/Schools, including information and resources for guiding students through career exploration.

 Manpower Demonstration Research Corporation is a for-profit research and evaluation firm. See Getting Connected – A Resource Directory for Career Academies, developed in partnership with CASN the directory lists guides and handbooks, articles, documents for purchase, resources available upon request, newsletters and journals, evaluations and research, websites and additional funding all with direct link, and the School-to-Work Transition Project, a collection of materials for sale based on the project.

MPR Associates is an educational research and evaluation firm that offers publications and technical assistance. See their Getting to Work guide on Integrated Curriculum, offering worksheets and instruction for the implementation and assessment of integrated curriculum. Also included in Getting to Work are modules on connecting learning with work, learning experiences, student assessment and cross-cutting issues such as staff development, staffing, scheduling, team building, relationships with workplace partners, parent involvement, addressing diversity and equity, and student entrance and exit issues.

National Academy Foundation supports a national network of career academies centered around three themes finance, travel & tourism, and information technology. Its resource center has resources and tools applicable to any career theme. National Career Academy Coalition (NCAC), is a coalition of schools, teachers, students, individuals and business that support career academies. See their Career Academy Toolkit, which contains an action plan and timeline.

New Ways to Work’s downloadable Getting Connected to School-to-Career, funded by the California Governor's School-to-Career Advisory Council's Employer and Labor Involvement Committee, is a comprehensive work-based learning toolkit, for employers, labor organizations and educators. It contains as resources, tools and best practices for employers, labor organizations and educators.

University of California a-g Interactive Guide assists high school educators in designing courses that meet the UC a-g requirements. Sample courses are provided by both content area and career pathway theme.

Work-Based Learning Resource Center has best practices and resources for work-based and school-based learning.

WorkSmart is a state website that offers information on entry to mid-level jobs and provides tips on resumes, job interviews and job seeking.

Standards and Assessment

Assessments in Career Education (ACE) is an exam given by the California Department of Education designed to recognize students who demonstrate outstanding achievement on rigorous examinations in Agriculture, Computer Science and Information Systems, Health Care, Food Services and Hospitality, and Technology.

California Department of Education see Academic and Career Integration Unit, Content Standards, Challenge Career Standards, (non-board approved standards in the areas of Foreign Language, Health Education, Physical Education, Service Learning and Applied Learning. Select the Career Preparation Overview for standards in Agriculture Education, Business Education, Industrial Technology Education, Health Careers Education and Home Economics. The Aiming High Toolkit provides tools, guides, and models for instituting standards-based school reform.

Institute for Workforce Education (IWE) designs and delivers custom-tailored staff development to meet the needs of business, education, and community partnerships. It promotes workforce education for schools and communities through professional development, technical assistance and training.
