What
is Project-Based Learning?
Projects
are a way to increase student engagement with
academic work by situating the work in a real-world
context. Adria Steinberg of Jobs for the Future
in her new book Real Learning, Real Work,
describes project-based learning as “class
or individual projects, jointly negotiated by
students and teacher, in which students investigate
an area of interest to them and importance to
the course of study. Work or community partners
help provide context and information for the project
and attend a culminating exhibition in which students
present and exhibit their findings and results.”
Projects
teach students to manage and allocate time and
materials. They motivate students by tapping into
their natural drive to do important work and their
need to be taken seriously -- as individuals capable
of contributing to the solution of problems and
the betterment of their communities.
