STANDARDS IN ALL DOMAINS OF LEARNING

Examples and Tools

The Oakland Unified School District worked with WestEd to codify “Career Cluster Standards” in each of 10 career areas:

  • Apparel, Textile and Fashion
  • Arts, Entertainment and Humanities
  • Business, Finance and Marketing
  • Education
  • Foods and Hospitality
  • Health and Bioscience
  • Information Technology
  • Media Communication
  • Public Safety and Human Services
  • Transportation

Each set of standards provides the following:

  • The (Functional) Employability Standards—the skills and qualities that are foundational to occupations in that cluster.
  • The Career-Technical Standards—the general knowledge and skills that are common across the multitude of occupations within the cluster.
  • The Discipline-Specific Academic Standards—the generic academic skills that support the career cluster; these have been synthesized from the district-adopted standards and highlight academic standards identified as important to the career cluster by the development teams. Included are performance indicators that provide examples of how the general academic skills can be contextualized by career-specific content.

The above postings are with the permission of Dr. Allie Whitehurst, Director of STC and High School Reform for the Oakland Unified School District.

The Contra Costa County Office of Education has developed “Life-Long Learning” Standards , among which are detailed standards for development of career awareness over the K-12 years. With permission from Louise Barbee, STC Coordinator from Contra Costa County, these have also been posted here.

The SCANS Skills (Secretaries Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills) is an example of Cross-Cutting Functional Domain Standards. It includes competencies and foundation skills identified by employers.
